Most diaper cover and insert makers use all-natural components like organic cotton and hemp, or bamboo fibers to construct absorbent diapers. Popular models include the one-size cover with a pocket for storing inserts. One or two work well depending on the time of day you change, but some parents might be tempted to put a microfiber insert on top of the cover when changing. This is not a good idea.
Microfiber material wicks moisture like sweat and urine away from the body. It is a common type of diaper insert because it helps keep a baby's skin dry. That said, however, it can also be quite abrasive, and when placed directly against the skin it can rub and cause irritation. It is imperative, therefore, that when using microfiber inserts to place then inside the pockets of a cloth diaper so you get the absorbency but not the potential for rash.
If you feel the need to double up on inserts - particularly for overnights when you are less likely to change diapers as often - look for one made of hemp or another natural fiber that doesn't prove as harmful. As diapers cover the most sensitive areas on your child, you do not want to do anything that causes redness.
